Description

Something different...I have a large inventory of crossword puzzles that I have accumulated over the years, primarily to create backgrounds for collages and mixed media pieces. They are printed on both newsprint and on glossy magazine paper. Newsprint will gradually age over the years due to the acidic nature of pulp paper, even if placed in ziplock bags in drawers not exposed to light. The aging process can be sped up considerably by placing the paper in sunlight for several weeks. This gives the “distressed” paper an antique patina that contrasts nicely with glossy paper.
For this project I decided to use the crossword pieces as the focal point instead of as a background. I laid out an unsymmetrical star on an 18x24 sheet of watercolor paper and cut and glued crossword pieces, and then cut the finished star out of the sheet. So this is an irregular six pointed collage. I placed it on different colored backgrounds to determine which would look best for a photograph, and decided on this neutral tan sheet of cardboard. The collage is not attached to the board.
