Douglas, Thank you for sharing your work in progress and how you achieve it!!! I love it! I would want to call it "Discombobulated Conglomeration"!! LOL

Douglas Fromm replied:

What a fabulous compliment !....and an absolutely perfect suggestion for a future title...I will have to start Discombobulating and Conglomerating a mixed-up media collage to match this superb description !

I love the information about your process! 3 or 4 layers deep! Wow!

Douglas Fromm replied:

Thank you for your lovely compliment....I am always fascinated by the methods used by other artists to create their work. There seem to be as many different processes as there are artists...

The combination of black, white, and red is stellar. Really draws on emotion. Plus I never get tired of your use of circles. Do you paint over your collages with Liquitex? And, may I ask, what type of glue do you use for gluing the paper images onto your substrate? I've been using repositional elmers and I love the flexibility of moving the cutout image. Thanks for the inspiration.

Douglas Fromm replied:

Thanks for your splendid compliment !.....my theory is that a mind sees all of the images of one color at a time, and then moves on to the next color. My mind focuses on Red first, then black or white, I never paint over paper on paper collages, primarily because I always have finished collages framed under glass. However I do use Liquitex Gloss varnish or Satin varnish on finished paper images mounted on canvas or wood panels to really make the colors pop ! I use Liquitex matte medium as an adhesive for gluing paper on any substrate, and E 6000 to adhere anything else, such as plastic items like buttons or bottle caps, and metal ones like coins or keys. I was not aware of repositionals until you mentioned it, they sound intriguing. What brand would you recommend ?

Artist's Description

Occasionally visitors have asked how I create collages, so I took this documentary photo of a work in progress. This an 18 x 24 inch piece of cardboard that I have been occasionally gluing scraps of paper on throughput the year of 2021. The working title is “ Ode to OCD “, referring to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which seems to run through my family. I am determined to finally finish this discombobulated conglomeration, Soon !
I gather scraps that might fit into the piece and spread them around the margins. If they seem promising then I trim them to fit and glue them on. If a better scrap comes along later I will glue it over an existing one. An X Ray photo of this work might reveal sections that are 3 or 4 layers deep. It is the collage version of overpainting.
It has been said that “ Out of Chaos comes Order “ ...That sounds like a logical Modus Operandi to me !
