I was asked to remove this piece from a gallery because the two featured cross-eyed ladies had uncovered nipples. So I covered the nipples with olives and cat eyes and showed it at another gallery instead.

Thank you for such a complimentary comment.....and for your dedication to showcasing our unique corner of the vast world of Art. Hopefully the Collage group will continue to not only keep “traditional” collage alive but expand the visions of the next generation of collagists. Ever since I joined FAA I have received questions from digital collagists asking what software I used to create certain works. They are sometimes bewildered when my answer is an imaginary program I made up called “ Cut and Paste 101 “. It seems that art education does not place much emphasis on teaching traditional collage, or relegates it to an historical artifact. Much the same has happened in Photography, according to my brother who was a professor teaching photography at the U. of Montana. Developing film in a darkroom has become a lost art.... Today’s bumper sticker slogan.... Collage is Alive and Well !!!

Douglas, this piece is astounding. I have to fight with myself NOT to be so focused on tiny detail, but when I see an impactful collage like this, I am assured that it is not only okay but can be quite miraculous! Color, multiple dimensions, movement, and everything you could want in a piece of art. Kudos!
Douglas Fromm replied:
Thank you ,!..my attention to detail is both a blessing and a curse. Some of my national award winning pieces, including one in the National Collage Teaching Collection, have been Collage by Accumulation - hundreds of tiny scraps of paper on 18x24” sheets. I spent hundreds of hours cutting and gluing, and often had artist friends tell me the pieces were grossly overworked. This piece has many layers of paper underneath the finished surface, it kept changing until I was finally satisfied. Your critique sums it up better than I could have, and validates all of the hours that I put in to it over several years!

If you don't lose those olives and cat's eyes I'll kick you offa this one too.
Douglas Fromm replied:
LOL !.....the first gallery was in a "provincial" town called Macon, in more liberal Atlanta I heard comments along the lines of your comment - "Why did you let them censor your work?" etc...."Don't do it again"....etc...
