Title
Fried Pink Tomatoes
Artist
Douglas Fromm
Medium
Painting - Acrylic & Collage On Canvas
Description
I started this piece with photos of heirloom tomatoes from my garden, then collaged images from gardening magazines, and finally added paint and gel medium to create the textured background. The finished work was featured on a postcard for a juried gallery show in 2009, and won a merit award at The Southeastern Mixed Media Show in 2010.

The title made me chuckle ~ great work, as always :))
Douglas Fromm replied:
Thank you.....the title does not have much to do with the work , except for containing the word Tomatoes. I was having trouble thinking of a title, until this one came to me almost by accident. I was watching a rerun of a movie titled Fried Green Tomatoes and decided to change the Green to Pink ....Serendipity !

I'm loving these tomatoes Douglas! Heirlooms are wonderful! Great artwork! l/f
Douglas Fromm replied:
Thank you ..in addition to tomatoes, heirlooms of any vegetables are good photographic subjects because of their incredible variations of shapes and colors, unlike hybrid homogenized greenhouse varieties....

Douglas, I feel your pain about unfinished series - I have so many piles of unfinished dreams I lost count... sometimes our brains are so full of ideas they just chase after butterflies... but sometimes those little buggers land back where we were before and inspire us to continue on the previous path. Best of luck! :)

I am fascinated by your swirling plant creatures Douglas, they have such an unearthly quality. Very nice work!
Douglas Fromm replied:
Thank you, once again !....as usual your perceptive comments are uniquely enlightening...”Swirling Plant Ceatures” would be a perfect title for a series that started with this piece. The second , in my FAA portfolio as “Fried Pink Eyeballz”, replaced the tomatoes in this one with eyeballs. It was an attempt at “humanizing” the shrub/tree. This reminds me of a recent statement that you made about trees are people. Alas, the series bogged down as I went in other directions, and is stalled as a matched pair. They are leaned up against my living room wall, eventually they may actually end up hanging on the wall !
